Record Lows - 2003

Record low temperatures in the United States

Scroll down to see 2003, 2002, 2001 and 2000

I'm including extreme rainfall here because that's
what causes ice ages ... too much precipitation.
If you want to know how much snow would fall
if a rainstorm should change to snow, just add a
zero. (One inch of rain - add a zero - will turn
to 10 inches of snow.) Rainfall has increased so
dramatically that I'm only including accumulations
 of 1½ inches or more.

Weather This Winter A Wild Ride  “This winter's weather will feature dramatic shifts between hot and cold from month to month, and even week to week,” say forecasters, who expect that the weather will fluctuate wildly.

"We're going to see outstanding cold spells throughout the U.S., balanced by unseasonable warmth," said AccuWeather's Joe Bastardi. "Our forecast emphasizes volatility, including cold snaps in the Northeast, and colder- than-normal weather in the Midwest and Plains," says Matt Rogers of EarthSat.”

Aug 2 Another long, cold winter, says Farmers Almanac. Beginning in February,  storms will hammer much of the eastern half of the country with no letup until early spring. Parts of New England will get snow into late April.

It looks like it will be reminiscent of last year, with a never-ending series of storms, said Sandi Duncan, the almanac's managing editor. The West also faces a cold, snowy winter, while mild weather is predicted in the Southeast.

The almanac, which claims an 80 percent success rate, has been predicting the weather for 187 years. It uses a secret method for its forecasts linked to sunspots, the position of the planets, and tidal action of the moon. Last year, the almanac predicted colder-than-normal temperatures and snow from Maine to Colorado.

Jul 18 Record-breaking July snow hits interior of Alaska. It was the first measurable snowfall to ever hit the Denali National Park and Preserve entrance in July, breaking records all over the heart of Alaska. Two inches of snow fell at Denali, one inch at Savage River, and 1 to 4 inches on Eagle Summit, forcing closure of the Denali Highway. Meanwhile, a record low temperature of 48°F was reported in Fairbanks. It was only the third July day in 99 years in which temperatures in Fairbanks failed to reach 50 degrees.

Record hailstones in Nebraska. Measuring 6½ inches wide (two inches wider than a softball) and 17¼ inches in circumference, one of the hailstones that fell in Aurora, Neb. last night was the largest hailstone ever recorded in Nebraska, and the second largest ever recorded in the United States.

The hailstones, some reportedly as big as volleyballs, punched all the way through some area roofs, leaving holes large enough to crawl through.

On Jun 28, searchers found an even bigger hailstone measuring 18¾ inches around, making it the nation's largest hailstone on record.
