| Aug 2 | Another long, cold
winter, says Farmers Almanac. Beginning in February,
storms will hammer much of the eastern half of the country with no
letup until early spring. Parts of New England will get snow into late
April.
It looks like it will be reminiscent of last year,
with a never-ending series of storms, said Sandi Duncan, the almanac's
managing editor. The West also faces a cold, snowy winter, while mild
weather is predicted in the Southeast. |

Record hailstones in Nebraska. Measuring 6½ inches wide (two inches wider than a softball) and 17¼ inches in circumference, one of the hailstones that fell in Aurora, Neb. last night was the largest hailstone ever recorded in Nebraska, and the second largest ever recorded in the United States.
The hailstones, some reportedly as big as volleyballs, punched
all the way through some area roofs, leaving holes large enough to
crawl through.

Record number of tornadoes hammer mid-America. May 11, 2003. More than 300 tornadoes blasted through mid-America during the past 10 days, by far the most ever recorded in that span. The number of people killed (44) is almost as high as the number of people killed by tornadoes during an average year. I've been asked if these tornadoes could have anything to do with an ice age. My answer is, yes, I think they're part of the ice-age cycle. I liken it to a period of benign climate known as the Eemian Period. The Eemian Period, which was even warmer than today, lasted from about 126,000 years ago to 115,000 years ago. When it ended, it ended with a bang. Our climate descended into a full-blown ice age in less than 20 years. I think we're at a similar climate threshold right now. |

Cold wet weather impacting crops. May 7,
2003. A spurt of rainy, cold weather has delayed rice planting in
California, the nation's leading producer of short- and medium-grain
rice. Only 30 percent of the 500,000-acre crop has been planted
because of rain. And what has been planted isn't growing because of
the cold weather. About 60 percent of the cotton crop in the San Joaquin Valley has also not been planted. Cherry and tomato growers have also reported losses. |

| Mar 12 | Great Lakes freeze. Mar 12, 2003. Three of North America's Great Lakes - Lake Huron, Lake Superior and Lake Erie - have frozen over. More than a month of temperatures below minus four Fahrenheit - the coldest for March in more than a century - has caused an ice blanket averaging as much as 24 inches deep on the lakes. Much of Lake Erie is buried under 28 or more inches of ice, while more than 90 percent of Lake Superior is covered with ice. At 32,000 square miles (82,000 sq. kilometers), Lake Superior is almost the size of Austria. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is hoping that icebreaking ships will enable the shipping season to begin on time. | |

| Jan 23 | The eastern two thirds of the nation
shivered beneath a bitterly cold air mass that has threatened
Florida's 9.1 billion dollar citrus crop, choked northern harbors with
ice and left residents of North Carolina's Outer Banks digging out
from a foot of snow.
Temperature records were broken for today's date across North Carolina. Record lows included 6 degrees in Asheville, 9 in Charlotte and 17 in Wilmington. In New England several days of subzero weather have resulted in icy harbors, bays and inlets, some of which have become impassable. One ferryboat headed to Massachusetts' Cape Cod had to be turned back because the inner harbor in Hyannis was frozen. |
