Scientists stumble across huge underwater mountain

29 May 09 - Marine scientists have discovered a massive underwater volcano off Indonesia’s western coast about 330 km (205 miles) west of Bengkulu city. The 4,600m (15,000ft) mountain spans 30 miles at its base, with its summit some 1,300 meters below the surface, marine geologist Yusuf Surachman Djajadihardja, said yesterday. Its discovery was "completely unexpected," he said.

          This undersea mountain is taller than Mount Rainier! And we didn’t
          even know it was there!

          We know more about the moon than we know about underwater
          volcanoes, but we still want to blame humans for heating the seas.

It was not immediately clear if the volcano is active – or even if the conical shaped mountain is a volcano - but Djajadihardja said that if it were - and if it erupted - it would be "very, very dangerous."
