To compare our sunspot count now _____________________________ |

Great email from a reader 16 Jul 08 - On your recent article on sunspots by Hathaway, one thing needs to be pointed out concerning his statement that the current 13 month smoothed sunspot number is greater than 12 of the past 23 sunspot cycles. Twenty-three sunspot cycles goes back 253 years. How long have we had the current technology to even measure the sunspot numbers? Today we are counting sunspots that would not have been possible a couple decades ago. So to compare our count now to what they were capable of a hundred years ago is asinine. If we were using past technology now, I think we would be seeing one of the lowest sunspot cycles ever. Just my layman’s point of view. Johnny Zornes
